Plastic moving boxes in Des Moines: pick them up, or have them delivered?
Reusable plastic bins beat cardboard for a local move, and there are two ways to rent them in the metro. Truck rental stores rent bins you collect and return yourself. We deliver totes to your door and collect them from the new one. Here is how to pick.
Store pickup bins
The model at truck rental counters: rent by the box, by the week, in person.
- Cheap per box per week if you only need a dozen and own a truck.
- Same-day if the store has stock and is on your way.
- Two trips in your own vehicle: one to load bins, one to return them.
- Returns go back to the same store, usually within a set window.
- No dolly, no delivery, and a deposit or card hold at the counter.
Delivered totes
Our model: a package sized by bedrooms, delivered and collected.
- Dropped at your current home, picked up from your new one. Zero trips.
- A 4-wheel dolly, lids, labels, and zip ties come with the stack.

- Not the cheapest way to get a dozen boxes if you are moving across the hall.
The price check
Store bins are usually quoted per box per week, and the published rates vary by location, so run their quote tool with your dates. For a two-bedroom home, about 40 boxes, two weeks of store bins plus the deposit, the two trips, and a dolly you do not get lands close to our 40 tote package at $169, which includes delivery, pickup, the dolly, and 14 days with no deposit.
Where store pickup genuinely wins is the small move: a dozen boxes, a pickup truck in the driveway, and a store on the way to work. If that is you, rent them there.
When delivered wins
Anything over about 20 boxes. Any move with stairs, where the dolly does the carrying. Any week where you would rather not make two extra trips in your own vehicle. And any move where the old and new homes are both inside the metro, since we collect from the new address and you never think about the totes again.
What we deliver
Black 27 gallon totes, about 30 by 20 by 15 inches, with snap-on lids. Packages from 15 to 80 totes, packs of 10 on top, small totes for books and dishes, and a 4-wheel dolly in every order. Delivery and pickup are free within 25 miles of Polk City, next-day on the north side.
